Enchanting Excerpt:
Alex took two silent steps on the thick carpet and was now standing right next to Monica, eyes locked on hers.

“I’ll see Miss Mitchell right now. If Terzakis calls, put him through. I will accept no other calls.” He took a step closer to the desk, inevitably entering Monica’s personal space. “Aren’t you supposed to be at some embassy or something?” he asked the other woman. His perplexed expression softened his features, giving him a vulnerable look that Monica found endearing.

He is overtired, she thought, now able to look at his face up close. His dark hair curled at the top of his ears and was not all in place as if he’d been running his hand through it.

She heard Jenny say, “I’m leaving right now. I’ll forward my line to reception and instruct them about your calls.”

After that, Alex refocused on Monica.

Now she had three options. One, look down at the rug seemingly appraising it, even though until fairly recently, she’d thought that Aubusson was expensive wine—risky; two, stand her ground under Alex’s scrutiny—too risky; or three, display studious interest in Jenny as part of Lesson A: How to Angle Desk Chair when Leaving Office—moronic but safe.

She went for option three.

Seemingly in slow motion, she watched the other woman snag her shoulder bag, pass behind Alex and press the elevator button. Alex hadn’t moved an inch and was still towering over her. “Good luck getting the job, Monica,” Jenny called, then mouthed, “And the man,” before she disappeared behind the sliding doors.
