Losing Who

Weekenders Romance Watch

Book 3 in the Loving Who series

Author: Cynthianna
Genre: Mainstream Romance
Buy: Mojocastle Press

Blurb:
Cici Connors is losing her mind—or is she? Alien time traveler John Smith vows to return her memories, but will his sci-fi con only attract an invasion of Earth by artificially intelligent life forms?

Enchanting Excerpt:
(A telepathic conversation between John and Cici, wherein he tries to explain why he had to blank her memories.)

The time lines…They got a bit muddy. We had to undo them and start afresh in order to keep the universe from exploding. You’re sensitive to how the time lines flow, Cici, but you’re not one of us who can step totally out of time and look at them objectively. So, you’ve got to trust me on this point—you know me from before, and I’ve come back for you against the wishes of my own kind.

Some of what he was relating to her mind made sense. Cici had felt these past few days as if she’d been yanked out of time and thrust back into it at another spot against her will. She sensed that the clock had been turned back and that she was reliving the same days again, only this time with a slightly different cast of characters in a completely different situation. You’re risking your own safety to be with me? she wondered.

I am. I’m risking your safety, too. That’s why I wanted to confess as soon as you seemed able to deal with this knowledge. If you want me out of your time line, I’ll go, Cici. But before I go, I wanted you to know that it wasn’t my idea to leave you behind in the first place.

You want to be with me? Cici felt tears burning beneath her eyelids, but she couldn’t find either her eyes or her tissue to wipe them away.
My kind doesn’t know what romance or love means really, but I think I’ve learned more about it since we met. It’s why I came back for you.

Damn… You’ve wrecked my cynicism. She felt the warmth of a sun upon her cheek like a kiss of an angel. Anything is possible, isn’t it, John Smith?

She heard a soft chuckle then, It is when you love someone, Cici Connors. Love makes all things possible.

A Long Trail Rolling

Weekenders Romance Watch

A Long Trail Rolling
Author: Lizzi Tremayne
Genre: Mainstream Romance
Buy: lizzitremayne.com

Blurb:
She didn't expect to become a target, but she is one now!
Seventeen year old Aleksandra, trained in the Cossack arts from infancy by her father, finds herself alone and running to prevent her Pa's killer from obtaining a secret coveted by the Russian Czar, one which could alter the forces of power in Europe. Disguised as a Pony Express rider in 1860's Utah Territory, she finds herself in even deeper trouble when she rides full speed into the middle of the Indian Paiute Wars. Her Californio boss Xavier has a strength to match her own, but can they overcome their differences before the ever-increasing odds overtake them?

Enchanting Excerpt:
'Sguir! Aleksandra, stop!' Aleksandra heard Scotty bark, and then continue in a low, steady voice. 'Wouldn't move, 'f I was you, Xavier. Her da's Cossack-trained and it 'pears she is too.' Scotty chuckled.

She felt Xavier ease his hold on her, but he didn't let go, despite the blade at his neck.

'Now a nighean,' Scotty admonished her, 'Xavier's a charaid, a friend. He's been watchin' over ye for the best part of the afternoon.'

She relaxed the death-grip on her shashka, removing its tip from Xavier's throat. Her gaze met his smooth cocoa eyes fringed by long, black lashes, crinkles of laughter showing at their corners. Aleksandra's bronze-skinned benefactor had the look of a dark Spanish lord.

'The vixen has teeth,' Xavier said with a grin.
Aleksandra gave him the ghost of a smile, then frowned at his hands still upon her. White scars crisscrossed his right one, and his knuckles. He let go of her and stepped back from her side.

'Well Aleks, feelin' better after yer little rest?' Scotty approached cautiously, removing the sword from her shaky grip. 'How 'bout a drink of water?' He reached for the filled mug. 'Ye ready to talk yet?'

She nodded slowly, eyes on Xavier.

'Where's yer da, Aleks?' Scotty's brow wrinkled, his voice tender.

Aleksandra's heart sank as she struggled to sit up. Reaching for the proffered cup, she drank slowly. The liquid's coolness soothed her cracked lips and parched throat. Handing the vessel back, she wrapped her arms about herself tightly, chin to chest. When she swayed again, she dimly noticed Xavier moving closer, and was surprised to recognize that she didn't mind his all-too-familiar closeness.

'Papa is at rest,' she said haltingly, so softly they had to move in close, 'with Mama and my brothers.'

False Hope

Weekenders Romance Watch

False Hope
Author: Marianne Rice
Genre: Mainstream Romance
Buy: Amazon

Blurb:
Mason Tucker prefers solitude and the company of his laptop, but when vivacious Emma Fulton begs for his computer expertise in tracking down family secrets, he agrees in order to keep an eye on the feisty brunette, as trouble seems to follow her wherever she goes.

Enchanting Excerpt:
“I thought you and Cole were a thing and I s-s-sabotaged it.”

Realization hit her like an airbag to a face. She touched her cheek and nearly collapsed.

“He told me you two aren’t … that you’re friends and not in a, uh, romantic relationship.”

She moved closer to the couch and glared at him. “Let me get this straight. You thought Cole and I were an item, but you slept with me anyway then pushed me away because you felt guilty, but just found out your brother and I are not an item and are now coming to apologize?”

Ick, when she said it out loud it sounded tacky and terrible, but her heart interpreted it differently. Kind of sweet. Paige must be wearing off on her, romanticizing a twisted love triangle. Still, she wasn’t about to let him off the hook so easily.

“You’ve apologized, so now what?” Lord bless him, but the man looked completely shocked. She bet he hadn’t thought that far.

“I… I don’t know.”

Never one to complicate matters—Emma inwardly rolled her eyes and snorted at herself—she knew she had to make the next move.

“Do you like me?”

“Of course.”

“Do you think I’m pretty?”

Mason raised an eyebrow and stood up. “No.”

She gasped.

“I think you’re beautiful.”

She melted. “Oh.”

“Do you like me?” he asked.

“I did. And then I didn’t. But I think I do now.”

“Oh. Do you think I’m pretty?” he smirked.

“No.” She waited a beat. “I think you’re so damn hot.” They stood toe to toe, waiting for the other person to make the first move.

Kissing shouldn’t have been so anticipating. But it was. And it was well worth the wait.

Life and Love in Vivid Color

Weekenders Romance Watch

Life and Love in Vivid Color
Author: Rhonda Jackson Joseph
Genre: Mainstream Romance
Buy: Amazon

Blurb:
Enjoy these colorful characters as they experience life and love, in vivid color. Walk with Rosalind Davis as she realizes love later in life is a relief. Come with Eva Grant while she and Santos help one another heal. Laugh at Melanie Durst pretending her way into everlasting love. Root for Daria and Maurice James as their loving marriage takes a hit from tragedy. Wish for Tisha Randall to get what she wants from Brian, when he comes into her store. Urge Aliyah and Andre to build happy ever after from their childhood friendship. Warm in the sunshine that Jasmine brings for Lemond when she smiles.

Enchanting Excerpt:
Bad idea. Terrible. Rosalind Davis kicked herself inside for attending the speed dating event that called itself "Mature Mingles". She'd had no idea when she'd signed up that "mature" actually meant "looking for a caregiver with benefits or a spouse who would become a caregiver".

She should have known that trying to make a romantic connection at her age would be difficult. Rosalind had only just decided she even wanted companionship and there she was, in a huge mess.

Her lips were exhausted from the effort she had to put into the tight, polite smile. Ring, buzzer. I'm ready to go.

She sighed in relief and closed her eyes. Only one more to go. She should have indicated that she was interested in meeting females, too. That way she might have at least gotten a good tennis partner out of the deal.

"I'm not trying to get married." The words tumbled from her mouth before the last man could take the seat across from her.

He sat down and held her gaze. "That's a relief. I don't usually propose until the first real date."

Rosalind flicked her gaze over the ID tag the man wore.

"Sorry."

"No apology necessary. I'm Darren."

"Rosalind."

"I'm glad this is the last stop tonight." He continued to look directly at her.

She felt the heat rise in her face at his intense gaze. "Me, too."

"I'm glad for your beautiful mouth."

"Excuse me?" Rosalind straightened in her chair and glared. She would get a bold pervert for the last contact of the night.

"I only meant that if you had to paste that little fake smile on one more time, your lips might crack and fall off."

The indignant anger leapt out of her and Rosalind laughed, the first genuine chuckle she'd emitted that evening.

"In that case, thank you. You're right."

He shrugged. "It would be such a shame to lose it. You might need your mouth later on. To eat or laugh or something."

She confirmed his observation with another giggle. He joined in, and she noticed how he laughed from his depths, and his smile completely reached his eyes.

"Nice to meet you, Darren."

"The pleasure is all mine." Darren held his hand across the table and Rosalind grabbed it. He firmly shook and then released her.

A part of her wanted him to hold onto her a bit longer.

Dream Student

Weekenders Romance Watch

Dream Student
Author: J.J. DiBenedetto
Genre: Mainstream Romance
Buy: Amazon

Blurb:
Sara Barnes thought everything was totally under control.  All she had to worry about was her final exams, Christmas shopping, applying to medical school – and the cute freshman in the next dorm with a crush on her.  Everything was going according to plan, until she started seeing other people’s dreams.

It’s bad enough that Sara is watching her friends’ most secret fantasies whether she wants to or not.  Much worse are the other dreams, featuring a strange man who commits unspeakable crimes.  Now Sara wonders if she’s the only witness to a serial killer – and the only one who knows where he’s going to strike next.

Enchanting Excerpt:
The truth is, unless I’m completely wrong about him we’re going to go upstairs sooner or later anyway.  It’s just a question of when if it doesn’t happen tonight.

But right at this moment, what I decide feels so important.  This is going to sound totally ridiculous, but it feels like something out of a movie.  You know what I mean, that moment when the music softens and the romantic leads are in the spotlight and everything else is forgotten; the whole world stops except for them.

Maybe it’s only my imagination or maybe I’ve got an overly developed sense of the dramatic–a few days ago I would have said it’s definitely that.  But it isn’t.  It’s not just my imagination.  It’s real. It’s exactly what’s happening right now.

I don’t know why it’s so important–no, that’s not true.  I do know.  It’s important because it’s exactly what I want and need right now, and maybe I’m lying to myself about love at first sight and everything else.  Maybe I’m just using him to distract myself from the nightmares and not sleeping right, maybe–well, maybe a lot of things.

You know what?  I don’t care about maybes, and I don’t care about motives and I don’t care about anything else except that he’s here right now.  He’s looking at me, waiting for me to decide.  Everything else is silent, frozen.  The snowflakes are hanging in midair; the whole world is waiting for my answer.

No pressure, though.  No pressure at all. Yes or no?  Nothing else matters except what I decide.

Yes.

Whispers in the Dark

Weekenders Romance Watch

Whispers in the Dark
Author: Kris Bock
Genre: Mainstream Romance
Buy: Amazon

Blurb:

Kylie Hafford craves adventure when she heads to the remote Puebloan ruins of Lost Valley, Colorado, to excavate. Romance isn’t in her plans, but she soon meets two sexy men: Danesh looks like a warrior from the Pueblo’s ancient past, and Sean is a charming, playful tourist. The summer heats up as Kylie uncovers mysteries, secrets, and terrors in the night. She’ll need all her strength and wits to survive—and to save the man she’s come to love.

Enchanting Excerpt:
“Don’t you read signs?”

I blinked at the apparition. “Uh....”

He gestured back at the main path. “The signs at every turn saying ‘Stay on the path’? The notice at the entrance telling you to leave artifacts alone? I could have you arrested and fined.”

Oh. I felt color flooding my cheeks. My pounding heart refused to slow yet, and the rush of adrenaline turned my arms and legs to jelly, but I rose steadily enough. I tried to ignore the heat in my face and the queasy feeling of panic in my stomach, which hadn’t yet accepted the message that I wasn’t in danger. “I’m Kylie Hafford,” I said coolly. “The archaeologist. Are you Danesh?”

I saw a satisfying flash of surprise and then guilt. Or maybe I had just imagined it, as his face settled immediately into a neutral mask. “Yes, I’m Danesh.” He hesitated before adding stiffly, “It’s nice to meet you.”

“The pleasure’s all mine.”

He must have caught my irony, because he almost smiled—I think. He said, “I’m sorry I startled you. I wasn’t expecting you yet, and....” He shrugged. “I’ve been noticing scuff marks in the ground, off the trail where tourists aren’t supposed to go. I figured someone was poking around, maybe looking for treasure.”

“And you assumed I was your treasure hunter?”
