Chasing Adventure

Weekenders Romance Watch

Entertainers of the West Series Book 8

CHASING ADVENTURE
Author:  Linda Carroll-Bradd
Genre:  Historical Romance
Buy: Amazon

Blurb:
Dime novelist, Thora Alviss, travels to Montana Territory seeking an ex-US marshal, Harte Renwyck, for an interview, knowing he has knowledge to make her characters better. Harte shies from publicity about his past life, especially about the tragedy related to his last arrest. Thora’s thirst for a good story is stronger than her ability to remain out of danger, and Harte comes to the rescue time and again. Will Thora give up and return east, or will she learn the survival skills she’s been writing about? Can Harte look past his resentment and see the adventurous woman close at hand?

Enchanting Excerpt:
“I admit to being a bit travel weary and the assistance is much appreciated. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.” Nodding, she walked up the steps.

Lofty praise for being neighborly. When was the last time he’d had such pretty words aimed in his direction? Moving with the speed of Mercury, Harte vaulted the steps and rounded the corner of the depot office. A small mountain of luggage comprised of a portmanteau, two valises, two carpetbags, and a satchel squatted beside a wooden bench. His boots skidded to a stop. Looked like he’d be the one making multiple trips.

“Oh, dear.” She let out a sigh. “In New York City, the porter used a push cart, and the quantity didn’t pose such a problem.” She dashed forward and grabbed the satchel, lifting the long strap over her head so it rested on her opposite hip. Then she leaned over and reached for a carpetbag.

Not wanting her to strain anything, Harte moved to her side. “I offered, although I didn’t know you had so many pieces. But I’ll manage. Somehow.” For a man accustomed to traveling light, he couldn’t imagine what she packed inside all these cases.

Cheeks blushing, she straightened and turned her head, her neck stiff. “Deputy, I am a healthy woman perfectly capable of assisting with the transport of my own belongings.”

“Duly noted, miss.” His words came out more clipped than he intended. Years of dealing with criminals had stolen his ability for idle talk. Setting his jaw, Harte hoisted the portmanteau to balance on his left shoulder then stooped to grab the handles of the matching carpetbags. “If you lift the valise, I can stretch my fingers around the handle.” Barely, but for his pride’s sake, he needed to make the offer.

Bending over, she lifted both valises. “I’ve got them. Now, if you’ll indicate the direction, we’ll be on our way.”

The corner of the leather case dug into his shoulder, and his right hand already ached from the weight. “Head toward the brick building down a ways on the opposite side of the street. The boardinghouse is past the mercantile.” He trudged down the steps, each move jolting his shoulder muscles. The lady’s rigid posture and swishing bustle informed him she still resented his thoughtless remark. Not exactly how he envisioned his morning walk through Sweetwater Springs. Chivalry, my backside.

The Seduction of Lady Charity – The Baxendale Sisters

Weekenders Romance Watch

(Book Four can be read as a standalone.)

The Seduction of Lady Charity
Author: Maggi Andersen
Genre: Mainstream Romance
Buy: Amazon

Blurb:
Lady Charity Baxendale has long dreamed of becoming a renowned portrait painter. After she’s received two significant commissions from esteemed family members, a rakish Scottish baron commissions her to do his portrait, and she feels she is one step closer.

When Robin, Lord Stanberry, with whom Charity has had a long friendship, asks her to marry him, she must choose between marriage and her career. She refuses him, for he is heir to a dukedom, and Charity fears that not only would she be unsuited to life as a duchess but also that her burgeoning career might end before it begins. And besides, Robin has made no mention of love.

Enchanting Excerpt:
“But is that all I am to you?”

Her gaze sought his. “No, of course not. You are my very dear friend.”

Robin uncoiled himself from the chair. He leaned over her, silently removed her pencil from her fingers, and placed it beside the sketchbook on the table.

Charity watched him as if frozen, her eyes wide, as he took her hands and drew her to her feet.

“Robin…?”

His hand cupped her chin, and his mouth came down on hers.

Her heart thudding in her ears, Charity held on to his arms as they entrapped her. Like stone, they didn’t budge an inch as he purposefully slid his mouth over hers. She dropped her arms and murmured incoherently. His tongue pressed along the seam of her lips, and when she parted them, more to deter him than encourage him, his tongue dived inside her mouth.

She sagged as her breath deserted her, and she grasped his shoulders to stay upright when her knees almost buckled. The intimacy of such an act made all her senses come alive, his masculine smell, his strong body against hers, all sinew and bone and muscle, the sweet taste of his mouth, and his lips, taking possession.

“Charity!” he whispered, his breath hot against her ear.

Knowing she loved him, and how impossible that was, became almost more than she could bear. She pushed at his chest. “Let me go, please, Robin.”

Robin released her, and she sank back in the chair.

“I’ve been yearning to do that for a very long time,” he said, leaning against the desk beside her. The smile in his eyes contained a sensual flame. “I’d like you to think about that, Charity. Think what we might have, here, together.”

The Diary of Narcissa Dunn

Weekenders Romance Watch

The Diary of Narcissa Dunn
Author: Elaine Violette
Genre: Mainstream Romance
Buy: Amazon | Nook | Kobo

Blurb:
THE DIARY OF NARCISSA DUNN is a ghostly love story. Set in New England, pre-Civil War. When Olivia’s father tries to force her into an unwanted marriage, mysterious events occur, leaving the family on edge. Meanwhile, Benjamin Pratt, desperately in love with Olivia, discovers an old diary that exposes scandalous, long hidden secrets. He becomes an unwilling messenger, torn between revealing truths that will shatter her identity and destroy her family, or keep the secret and watch her marry another. Either way, he’s bound to lose her unless a mysterious woman intervenes.

Enchanting Excerpt:
“William believes it is God’s will we marry. He’s already talked to Father and received his blessing. What was I to say?  Do I even have a voice in the matter?”
Lovena’s bosom lifted and sagged. “You been spending time with Mr. Tapley, goin’ for walks and carriage rides. Didn’t you plan to go with him to the spring dance the town been plannin’ after Easter?  In his mind, you and him were courtin’ in a respectful way.”
“Most of the time he converses with Father.” Olivia’s shoulders slumped. Had she led him to believe she was expecting a proposal? “I admit I was flattered by his attentions at first, but I hadn’t considered our relationship went beyond friendship…until recently.”
“A man’s attentions to a pretty young woman ain’t never a desire for only friendship.”
“I hadn’t meant to lead him to thinking I’d want to marry him.” She covered her face with her hands.
Lovena pushed out a chair and sat beside her. “I think you been enjoyin’ Mr. Tapley’s attentions until the Pratt boy started showin’ up.”
Olivia couldn’t deny it. At first she was flattered by William’s desire to spend time with her but deeper feelings hadn’t grown, despite the time they spent together. Even his kisses were forgettable. It was so different with Ben. Her heart leaped in her chest the minute she saw him arrive to begin his work. Her body tingled into the depth of her womb when they were together.
Lovena wiped away a tear that rolled down Olivia’s cheek. “We can’t control those feelin’s inside, Livie, when the right boy stirs ‘em up.”
“What am I to do?” Father will understand, won’t he? He can’t expect me to marry a man I could never love.”

Coddled and protected from the harsh realities of life, Malene runs away from a bad marriage by posing as a chaperone to her younger sister. A series of events soon prove she's capable of standing on her own two feet. However, she's not prepared to follow her heart and accept marriage from the one man who truly loves her.

Enchanting Excerpt:
Mark jumped inside the moving carriage. Angelina screamed, which set off Clara and Sophia.

"This is the welcome I get?" Before Malene could open her mouth, Mark covered hers with his. Her fingers clawed at his shoulders as she took his breath. He whispered in her ear, "I have missed you, my beautiful woman of the sun."

Brownie snarled, and Mark held his hand for the dog to sniff. "It is good, my furry friend. No one else gets to do this to Malene. You understand that?"

The dog settled down as if he used to Mark to being there, but little Clara was curled into a tearful ball in Angelina's lap, and Sophia wailed.

He picked the toddler up and cuddled her in his arm. "Have you forgotten me?" He ran his finger over the child's cheek and over her bright reddish curls. "I brought you into this world, my darling. Your memory is too short."

Sophia looked up at him. Her tear-filled expression turned to a grin. His heart swelled. He had his child and his woman. His gaze turned to the pretty woman traveling with Malene. "You must be Angel-enna."

Malene giggled. "An-gel-le-na."

He rolled his hands palms up and repeated the name.

"Yes." The woman nodded as she spoke.

"Pleased to meet you." He reached over and tickled Clara, but the child screamed at his touch.

Malene pulled Clara into her lap. "This is Mark. He is different, but that is no reason to fear him."

Mark took the little girl's hand in his. "Yes, I am different because I am Apsáalooke, or of the Crow tribe. I am a man. My skin is darker than yours, but it is only skin."

Her Savage Heart

Weekenders Romance Watch

Her Savage Heart
Author: Chandler Adams
Genre: Mainstream Romance
Buy: Amazon

Blurb:
Margaret knew that staying on the claim alone was not going to be easy, but she needed to stay behind and take care of the homestead while her father made the arduous trip to replenish their supplies. Margaret is forcefully abducted by a savage. Only after freeing herself and eventually helping her abductor does Margaret learn that the savage, Avonaco, had saved her from certain death. Through the course of time, Margaret and she finds herself becoming attracted to the Indian. She is willing to defy territorial law to love and be with him.

Enchanting Excerpt:
She hesitated before going back into the cabin. She had a wounded Indian in her home. She felt that she could comfortably nurse him back to health, but what was she going to do with him afterwards? Did she really want a healthy Indian in her home? She still did not know why he had tried to abduct her and, though she felt that he did not intend to kill her, she had no proof to the contrary. She realized that she may be inviting the cause of her own demise into her home.

Margaret shrugged off those thoughts and began the arduous task of getting the Indian into a bed. He would have to sleep in her father’s bed. Her room was in the loft, and there was no way she would be able to carry the Indian up the stairs to put him in her bed. The words “her bed” made her catch her breath. The thought of the Indian lying naked in her bed excited her in a way she had never felt before.

Finally, the realization struck her like a lightning bolt. She was attracted to the Indian. What a difference a few hours had made. At one point she was loading the rifle, wondering if she would be able to shoot him dead if needed. The next moment, she was fantasizing about having him in her bed, lying next to him, touching every inch of his body.

Fiona's Knight of Dreams

Weekenders Romance Watch

Fiona's Knight of Dreams
Author: Sharon McGregor
Genre: Mainstream Romance
Buy: Amazon

Blurb:
Timber ladies are looking for a wife for their new single minister.  But then Charles meets Fiona, the lovely accident-prone and outspoken part-time librarian. She is holding out for a knight on a white charger to carry her away from small town life. Fiona and Charles are thrown together as they begin to solve an old mystery which has turned up in a library book. Will Fiona's white knight show up to sweep her away? Will Charles run out of invitations for cream cakes and lemon slice? Fiona might  discover the sound of hoof-beats when she least expects it.

Enchanting Excerpt:
No sooner had Charles Redpath entered her thoughts than he entered the library.

"Finished your books already?  You must be a fast reader."

"Well, I discovered I'd already read the Perry Mason and the book on Revelation was a little too much on the dry side."

"Funny, I thought Revelation was the one preachers used to scare the congregations. I never thought of it as dry. But then any book of sermons might take a little work to get through. I mean if you have to listen to one on Sunday mornings, why would you.." she broke off and put her hand to her mouth to stop any more words escaping. “I’m sorry, I didn't mean…"

"Oh I know what you meant." She looked up expecting to see an expression of censure or hurt or disapproval, but instead Fiona could swear his eyes were twinkling, very nice brown eyes with a definite twinkle. Now why did she think that?

"Sunday sermons are an occasional requisite for spiritual guidance," he said, “but a little can go a long way. On the other hand, mine sometimes have a certain soporific value."

"Not if you're preaching them on Revelation," she retorted.

"Good. Your smile is back." He held out the book of sermons, "Actually I wanted to show you something in this one."

She looked at the book suspiciously. Was she wrong in her evaluation? Was he going to start giving her a private lesson in the scripture?

He shook the book and two envelopes fluttered out to the counter. "I found these in the book and I wonder if we should try to return them to the owner."

Studio Relations

Weekenders Romance Watch

Studio Relations
Author: Georgie Lee
Genre: Mainstream Romance
Buy: Amazon

Blurb:
As one of Hollywood's only female directors in 1935, Vivien Howard is now directing her dream film, a lavish Civil War romance. She's not about to let anyone spoil it, especially not handsome studio executive Weston Holmes.

When Weston learns Lion Studios is backing a war movie made by a woman, he scoffs at the idea and earns the enchanting Vivien's wrath.

During production, sparks fly. Vivien and Weston ignore the gossip until a scandal nearly ruins them both. The only solution: a marriage of convenience that forces the bickering duo into an unlikely alliance—and their own happily-ever-after.

Enchanting Excerpt:

Hollywood 1935

Vivien Howard marched into Earl Holmes's office and threw the script on his desk. "Storm of the South. This is it. This is the picture I want to direct next."

Earl picked up the script and flipped through it, unfazed. "The Civil War? It's been done, and badly."

"Not the way I'm going to do it."

"I read the script a couple of months back. It's a war movie. A woman can't direct a war movie." He tossed the script onto his large mahogany desk and leaned back in his leather chair, his hands clasped over his round belly, his graying eyebrows knitted as his eyes bored into her. Earl's imposing attitude would have cowed a lesser director, but Vivien had played this game too many times with the old studio head to be scared off now.

"It's a love story set during a war."

"The Civil War."

"I know exactly how I'm going to shoot it." She sat down on Earl's plush leather sofa, pushing back her shoulder- length curly brown hair. She crossed her legs, thankful Miss Hepburn's popularity had made wearing trousers respectable. Even if the Women's Decency League proclaimed pants the ruin of womankind, Vivien preferred them to skirts and always made sure they were femininely tailored to complement her dark hair and eyes. Being one of only a few female directors in Hollywood, she played a man's game, but she was always careful to remain a lady. Her career depended on this tightrope walk. Earl leaned back in his chair and studied her. She knew he was intrigued, but she also knew he hated to let directors think they were getting their way, even if they were.

"The boys in New York won't like the idea of a woman directing a war movie," he replied, selecting a cigar from the humidor on his desk.

"If you pitch it right, they'll love this project."

A Long Trail Rolling

Weekenders Romance Watch

A Long Trail Rolling
Author: Lizzi Tremayne
Genre: Mainstream Romance
Buy: lizzitremayne.com

Blurb:
She didn't expect to become a target, but she is one now!
Seventeen year old Aleksandra, trained in the Cossack arts from infancy by her father, finds herself alone and running to prevent her Pa's killer from obtaining a secret coveted by the Russian Czar, one which could alter the forces of power in Europe. Disguised as a Pony Express rider in 1860's Utah Territory, she finds herself in even deeper trouble when she rides full speed into the middle of the Indian Paiute Wars. Her Californio boss Xavier has a strength to match her own, but can they overcome their differences before the ever-increasing odds overtake them?

Enchanting Excerpt:
'Sguir! Aleksandra, stop!' Aleksandra heard Scotty bark, and then continue in a low, steady voice. 'Wouldn't move, 'f I was you, Xavier. Her da's Cossack-trained and it 'pears she is too.' Scotty chuckled.

She felt Xavier ease his hold on her, but he didn't let go, despite the blade at his neck.

'Now a nighean,' Scotty admonished her, 'Xavier's a charaid, a friend. He's been watchin' over ye for the best part of the afternoon.'

She relaxed the death-grip on her shashka, removing its tip from Xavier's throat. Her gaze met his smooth cocoa eyes fringed by long, black lashes, crinkles of laughter showing at their corners. Aleksandra's bronze-skinned benefactor had the look of a dark Spanish lord.

'The vixen has teeth,' Xavier said with a grin.
Aleksandra gave him the ghost of a smile, then frowned at his hands still upon her. White scars crisscrossed his right one, and his knuckles. He let go of her and stepped back from her side.

'Well Aleks, feelin' better after yer little rest?' Scotty approached cautiously, removing the sword from her shaky grip. 'How 'bout a drink of water?' He reached for the filled mug. 'Ye ready to talk yet?'

She nodded slowly, eyes on Xavier.

'Where's yer da, Aleks?' Scotty's brow wrinkled, his voice tender.

Aleksandra's heart sank as she struggled to sit up. Reaching for the proffered cup, she drank slowly. The liquid's coolness soothed her cracked lips and parched throat. Handing the vessel back, she wrapped her arms about herself tightly, chin to chest. When she swayed again, she dimly noticed Xavier moving closer, and was surprised to recognize that she didn't mind his all-too-familiar closeness.

'Papa is at rest,' she said haltingly, so softly they had to move in close, 'with Mama and my brothers.'

Her Highland Destiny

Weekenders Romance Watch

Sequel to Highland Miracle

Her Highland Destiny

Author: Leanne Burroughs
Genre: Mainstream Romance
Buy: B&N

Blurb:
In 1304, amidst Scotland's continuing war for independence, two wounded souls are forced on a journey neither wants, resulting in tragedy and disaster.

Battle-hardened, untrusting, and son of a Scottish Chieftain, Duncan MacThomas wants only to see his country free from English rule. Honor-bound to ensure his clan's financial future, Duncan travels to wed a woman he doesn't want.

Wealthy and pampered, Catherine Gillingham anticipates a marriage to a Duke's son and is dismayed when her king decrees she must wed a Scotsman.
Can these two opposites find love amidst war?

Enchanting Excerpt:
When the priest asked for Catherine’s voice of consent, her eyes slipped sideways to appraise the angry man beside her. His stony silence seemed as eloquent as any bard’s tale. He wanted nothing to do with her.

Her voice cracking, she barely whispered the words that would forever alter the course of her life. "I will."

The man beside her stood rigid as she gave her response. He exhaled loudly and said through clenched teeth, "Aye, I will."

The priest completed the holy message despite the palpable tension, then moved inside the chapel to offer communion and bless the marriage.

Catherine couldn’t believe the priest’s audacity when at ceremony’s end he smiled at Duncan and said, "You may give your bride the kiss of peace."

Duncan eyed the priest as if he’d lost his mind, then turned for the first time to face his lady wife.

Trying to keep his expression unreadable, his gaze traversed the length of her body. Seal this unwanted union with a kiss to show the two families joined together with no ill feelings? He’d not do it. All he’d had to do was tell the priest he protested. The ceremony would have gone no further. He couldn’t do it. His clan needed him. Before he left home he’d decided not to stay with her after the wedding, wanting nothing to do with a woman his father selected. He planned to leave as soon as he took her to his home. He wouldn’t change his mind now.

He stood resolute—and unable to breathe—for he stared at one of the loveliest women he’d ever seen.

Highland Miracle

Weekenders Romance Watch

Highland Miracle
Author: Leanne Burroughs
Genre: Mainstream Romance
Buy: Amazon

Blurb:
While the Scottish War for Independence rages, a young Laird heads to the Scottish-English border to avenge his father’s murder. The time for retribution has arrived. Rage tightly controlled, Grant Drummond presses forward toward the Norman-style manor to take its inhabitants by surprise.

Victoria Blackstone tensed with a sense of foreboding. Her stomach knotted as she surveyed the men surrounding her. Instinct warned her to escape. Her movements gave Grant pause. As his grey eyes surveyed the woman fate just delivered into his hands, he smiled—first time since hearing the terrible news about his father’s death.

Enchanting Excerpt:
“What will you do with her, Grant?”

A chill washed over Victoria.

Looking into her soft brown eyes, Grant saw an attempt at bravado. The top of her head didn’t even reach his chin. A look of defiance blazed from the depths of her eyes and he almost laughed. Most men were afraid of him, so she certainly should be. She should be quaking in her borrowed boots. After all, he held her life in his hands. He instilled fear in men much larger and braver than this wee wisp of a girl.

Leave her. That’s what he’d do.

He hadn’t come to take prisoners. He’d traveled to Berwick to kill Blackstone, and that he’d done—with his own sword. He didn’t need to kill everyone as the detestable English had done at the massacre that left thousands dead. Those were their filthy tactics, not his.

How could he have mistaken her for a lad, even if only momentarily? From what he could see beneath the soot, he imagined her quite pretty. She returned his glare insolently, yet her breaths came heavy with fear. She drew her tongue between her parched lips.

The effect on him proved immediate. “Fetch her,” he shot over his shoulder as he walked away. The young woman stared in mute horror, as if not believing she’d correctly heard his words.

“Nay!” Her eyes grew wide with terror.

Grant heard the desperation in her voice.
“Grant?” Alexander queried.

“Fetch her.” Grant didn’t look back or spare the woman in question a second glance. He struggled not to break into a grin. Failing, a hint of a smile eased up the corners of his lips as he walked away and found his mount.

‘Twas the first time he’d smiled since hearing the terrible news about his father.

Christmas Fete

Weekenders Romance Watch

Christmas Fete
Author: Barbara Miller
Genre: Mainstream Romance
Buy: EllorasCave

Blurb:

When Dinah’s father inherits an estate, he decides she and her brother must go settle the matter. They arrive to find the place in need of much repair—and holiday spirit. As Dinah plans a cheerful fete for Christmas in hope of winning over the locals, she finds herself winning over someone else as well—Richard, the handsome man who lives next door.

Richard never expected to meet someone like Dinah—a woman who is headstrong and decisive. A woman he could spend his life with. Unfortunately, Richard needs a Christmas miracle to extricate himself from a tricky obligation.

If it’s a miracle he needs to be free, Dinah is determined he’ll get it—that way they can spend their Christmas fete together and everyone can enjoy their happily ever afters.

Enchanting Excerpt:

Richard wet his lips, which had gone numb. “I’m not sure how it happened.”

“You were compelled to offer for her,” Dinah whispered.

“Somewhat reluctantly. Later I suspected she manipulated me into it, but that does her an injustice. I did offer.” He saw tears sparkling on Dinah’s lashes and raised a finger to brush them away but she ducked her head.

“Should we announce your engagement during the festivities? People will hear of it soon enough.”

“Please don’t. I keep hoping something will happen to prevent it, the earth crack or a violent storm that will blow the two of us away from here, never to return. I want to be with you, only you, always. Life with Ophelia will be living a lie.”

She smiled at his fantasy. “And yet you are bound to honor your generous impulse.”

“I don’t want to. I only offered because I had never met anyone like you before, never met you, who seem to be the only like-minded soul I have ever found on this earth. You understand me.”

“I am in the same case. I never thought about marriage until I met you, someone who actually cares, who takes me seriously.”

He took her in his arms and kissed her, the heavy coat falling to the floor. If only this moment could go on forever. He could imagine their future life, lose himself in it, but then she dipped her head with a sigh.

“I am so glad we did that at least once,” she said.

The Christmas Lights

Weekenders Romance Watch

The Christmas Lights
Author: Rachael Kosinski
Genre: Mainstream Romance
Buy: Amazon

Blurb:
"Where do Christmas lights come from?"
Those tiny bulbs of color that burn on a Christmas tree,
Or outside a house to shine in the night.
Does anyone really know where they originate? What if someone told you
They weren't intended for Christmas at all,
But really for a miracle?
That they were for love, a desperate idea, to light a boy's way home?
In that case, you must have some questions. What boy? What love?
Have a seat. Allow me to tell you a story.

Enchanting Excerpt:
"Louis!"

"…I hear factories in London are much safer than here."

"London! Louis, Louis, what are you talking about?" Emmy grabbed my face. I squinted at two sparkling brown orbs. Was she crying? "No." Emmy covered her mouth with a hand. "No, you aren't going to London. How could you? No one loves you there. No one knows you there…"

"Emmy. Emmy Emmy Emmy." I held her close, stroking her hair. "I don't plan to work there."

She sat back. "What?"

"I've heard Mr. Godfrey talk about them. A London factory is the last place I should work. Your father means well, but I can't do that. They wouldn't take a blind boy."

"Wh-where will you go, then? How on earth will you make money?"

"I have family in Paris. Mother says they have wine vineyards. I'll work for them."

"That…" Emmy's fingers traced the veins on the back of my hand. "That's much safer." She was silent for the longest time. "You'll be safe? And come home quickly?"

I pulled her hands away and stood, playing with the ring on her finger. "I will. I love you."

"Louis…"

"Emmy. I don't have a choice. You want to marry me, don't you?"

"Of course I do. But, Louis…"

"Yes, love?"

"How long will you be gone?"

How long? How long to board a ship, to find a place I'd only heard about, to earn and save an impossible amount of money? How long, indeed. I set my expression. "I'll be home by Christmas."

Blurb:
One Last Letter is the story of Evelyn Lancaster, a romantic hardened by reality, and Jesse Greenwood, a cowboy returning to what he left behind. The rough, reticent cowboy returns to Texas with new wealth to save his first love's ranch from financial ruin while she hopes for a second chance after she was forced to spurn him years ago. Will one last letter give them the courage to say yes to love on the wild Texas plains?

Enchanting Excerpt:
Evelyn Lancaster wanted to run away as fast as possible.

It was a mistake. It was one colossal, gargantuan mistake. Worse than Athens ordering the death of Socrates. Worse than Persephone being kidnapped by Hades. What did she think she was going to do? Seconds ticked by as she found herself unable to say anything more. Her mouth felt dry. What was she supposed to say?

He’d changed, more than she would have ever imagined possible. The boyish frame was filled out, and extra years working on the ranch had defined the muscles in his arms under his coarse brown shirt. He’d even grown taller—past six feet, she guessed. His shoulders were broader, and his cheekbones seemed more pronounced than before. His face carried even more of an aristocratic air, but his body seemed undeniably more masculine.

Yet the expression was the same. Jesse Greenwood’s same reticent, admiring expression hadn’t changed as he continued to stare at her like she was hand-blown glass. His brown hair still flopped lightly in front of his eyes, causing him to brush it away.

“Hey, Eve.”

She cleared her throat. She’d anticipated the awkwardness but not the simple difficulty in forming words. “I returned home a few hours ago. I thought I should stop by and say hello. Is Preston here? Are any of the other ranch hands here?”

Jesse blinked. The adoring expression morphed to one of disbelief. “Eve, did you get my letters?”

She bit her lip. “I did.” Evelyn resisted the urge to embrace him. Doing so would only make it harder to answer his questions with a lie. Instead, she stood rooted to the spot. She wouldn’t move a muscle; there was too much she could regret. “They were nice letters. Thank you. But I burned them.”
