"Miss Washington." The voice had that down-home, Southern drawl.
She stopped to hunt faces. Maybe, she neglected to speak to someone she knew. Next, she thought, I don't know anyone whose voice conjures up such intrigue.
"Over here."
Drifting back a step, she searched the shady areas of the courtyard. Instantly, Erika spotted the speaker. She laughed. The American flag was emblazoned across the chest of a mysterious man in a black tee. He had that Gerard Butler-looking thing going on, and watched her from behind his dark glasses.
"Mr. Templet?"

Lily's Summer Cowboy:
ReplyDelete“Come in, please.” Lily stepped by him and caught a whiff of his cologne. Woodsy, leathery. Manly.
In contrast, she needed a shower.
He followed her into the house and Lily cringed a little. Never a great housekeeper, during the growing season she barely had time to dust, much less do a thorough cleaning. She led the way into the kitchen and grabbed two glasses from the drainer and a pitcher of tea from the fridge. After pouring them both a glass, she took a seat at the kitchen table. He took off his Stetson and placed it next to his right elbow.
They both sipped, and for a minute Lily let herself enjoy the company of a man. The house had been so empty since Jeff’s passing. She coughed on her tea. What? Whoa! Will might be a man, but a very young one.

From A Perfect Catch
ReplyDelete“Having any luck?”
Erin looked up into sky blue eyes that could hypnotize if she’d let them. The tall stranger stood looking down at her, his eyes twinkling. She wasn’t prepared for the way her heart lurched nor the heat spreading through her.
“Not yet, but I will.”
“You sound pretty sure of yourself.” He cocked his head to one side, and she noticed he had a crooked smile.
“Yep.” She forced herself to look away, afraid he could see how he affected her. That was the last thing she needed right now.
“By the way, I’m Kyle Chesterford.” His voice was smooth, like a fine wine, and just deep enough to send chills running down her spine. Even bundled up in his quilted coveralls, she could tell he had a wide chest and was handsome underneath that fur cap

This is from M. S. Spencer’s current WIP, tentatively entitled Catherine & Her Maine Man. Catherine meets Quinn Taggart, a Maine guide.
ReplyDelete[Quinn] had moved to the window and stared sternly out at the darkness as though he could will it to be light. His dark brown hair straggled attractively across his forehead, slightly obscuring the deep chestnut of his eyes. Catherine wondered fleetingly about his background. He had said he was born here, but something about the way he stood and walked said military. The salt mixed in with the pepper at his temples hinted at over forty, although he was obviously still in excellent physical shape. Her eyes traveled over his shoulders, down his chest and…she blinked as he turned and looked directly into her eyes. She stumbled back, overwhelmed by the sheer masculinity of him.
“Well, g-g-good night all,” she repeated stupidly. She backed away from Quinn and lurched down the hall to her room. Brushing her hair with angry strokes, she whispered furiously to her image in the mirror. Boy, are you ever smooth, Catherine Killeen. He must think you’re a total moron. She sighed. I can hardly wait to make a fool of myself tomorrow, too.

Driving in England
ReplyDeleteby Cynthianna and AJ Matthews
“If I’m lucky, there might be two Reverend Titus Spaldings in England, and the boss is related to the more normal fella. Please, Lord, let that be the case!”
Swallowing her pride, and a few dry crumbs of bagel, Susannah headed back to her laptop to email the uptight Brit.
Dear Mr. Balfour:
I’m in need of your assistance. I’m working on a genealogy project on behalf of my employer, Harold Spalding, and may have discovered a link in his family tree to a Reverend Titus Spalding of Understrand, Norfolk County, England. As I recall reading online, you’re a resident of the area. Could you check your own and local sources to enlighten me as to the true character of this individual? Could his name have been confused with any others of same or similar name? Your help in the past has been most appreciated, and I thank you in advance for this undertaking.
All the best,
Susannah Koenig
Tapping send, she glanced at the computer clock. Britain was six hours ahead of Texas, so Balfour would receive her missive first thing in the morning local time. Good enough. She’d check her email in the morning to see if the priggish academic felt her request for information worthy of an immediate reply.
Give the devil his due, Balfour always replies in a timely manner with hard factual material, even if his tone is patronizing. But somehow, Susannah got the impression the man found addressing a lowly American amateur beneath his dignity. Hadn’t she paid his fees promptly? Hadn’t she been businesslike and fair in all her dealings with the man?
