“It wasn’t that I didn’t think about you before,” he said; “I felt good just sitting next to you, and you only cared about me getting better and going back to the wood. I thought about touching you, but I knew I’d scare you, and that would be the end of the porch sitting, and I didn’t want Brock to kill me.”
Oh, maybe he did have a sense of humor after all. And he could cook. She might be one of the few women who’d take that into consideration. “Are you sure?” She didn’t want a man who had to be dragged into marriage like a horse being dragged into the corral to be broken. “You don’t want to take another year or two to make up your mind for certain?”

“No, I’m sure, and it suddenly dawned on me that while I’m being scared and stupid, another man could claim you and be the one to touch you. Now that truly scares me.”
And what came out of her mouth next startled them both. “You can touch me,” and she didn’t say it hesitantly. It was an invitation. He picked her up and took her into the cabin and held her closely in the light of the fire. Hugging and kissing standing up led to hugging and kissing and more touching lying on the floor.
The dying fire was casting shadows and the occasional spark when he finally raised himself up and rested on his arms over her, studying her face. “Oh, good,” she said. “Maybe I won‘t need the skillet after all.”
He shook his head and laughed. “Nope. I’m due at the Summers’ to spend the night there. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Brock came to fetch me. But wait a minute, I’m trying to think of the words.”
